Book 4 of my 3-week challenge.
I had written – on my mission for the holidays that this was a book I would read purely because of its author, and it has surpassed my expectations of how great a book can be. Suzzane Collins has definitely kept her standards and I know for sure, that this is a series to pursue.
But before I say more – how about, I give you the official summary?
Here it is!
When Gregor follows his little sister through a grate in the laundry room of their apartment building, he hurtles into the dark Underland beneath the city. There, humans live uneasily beside giant spiders, bats, cockroaches, and rats – but this fragile peace is about to fall apart.
Gregor wants no part of a conflict between these creepy creatures. But when he discovers that a strange prophecy foretells a role for him in the Underland, he realizes it might be the only way to solve the biggest mystery of his life.
This unforgettable novel by Suzanne Collins, the internationally bestselling author of The Hunger Games series, is rich in suspense and brimming with adventure.
Hey! That totally stole whatever I was going to say! I don’t know what more to write without repeating anything above. This book was released in 2003 (before the hunger games) and was received well by critics, it is the book for the average 4th, 5th or 6th grader. An adventure book which is engaging enough to get anyone to read (gamer, reluctant reader, reader).
I read this book while on my trip to India and got quite a few scoldings for it, I later came to know that while I was reading my parents and relatives were asking me questions, asking me to take out the laundry. To go help my cousin with his homework. And in return, I just mumbled some nonsense as I was only in the book’s world. Not in this one. What can I say? As I couldn’t stop reading (so my parents had to yank it out of my hands) I had finished 306 pages worth of words in one day!
That was pretty much me.
The story starts off with Gregor, who has to babysit his sister and losing-touch-with-reality grandma following his sister around the house, her feet take Gregor to their laundry whereas he gets distracted for one second, he finds his sister disappeared! In a panic, he looks where he saw her last – leading him to a faulty vent, a little too faulty if you ask me, he recognizes her baby squeak as he tries to lean himself into the vent. Well, he succeeds. A strong wind sucks Gregor in as it did his sister, and soon flailing around he is falling, to he has no idea where. He spots his sister laughing and grabbing at the face-tearing wind rushing up and quickly grabs her, they both fall for hours with no ground to be seen.
Finally, they spot something solid and as their eyes come into perspective they realize that ‘something solid’ is or rather are rocks. Gregor throws himself down first to break the fall for his sister. And somehow, miraculously they land and don’t break every bone in their body. As Gregor struggles up to his feet, he notices a rock moving, he waves this off. Then all the rocks start noticeably moving and all his sister has to respond to that is – “Bah boo boo!”. Then in front of their eyes, the ‘rocks’ get up and reveal their bodies of cockroaches, the say something to each other and Gregor is carried to the land where a few hundred, probably thousand humans live together with giant bats, enemy rats, and – well, roaches.
Gregor wants more than anything to go home, and this action-packed novel follows his tries to get there. But as he adapts to his new world and learns its rules, he sees a fragile piece of peace about to fall apart. The other humans see him as a legendary warrior from a prophecy and he turns this down. But when he sees an opportunity to solve the greatest mystery and sorrow of his life. He has to agree.
And so through writing at it’s best, wartime situation, unraveling prophecies, dark secrets, deceptions and most of all brimming adventure begins a journey of a team that has the responsibility to save humankind in the underworld and to saves Gregor’s dad.
